‘Think and wonder, wonder and think.’ - Dr. Seuss
‘The discipline of structure precedes the delight of spontaneity.’ This golden nugget of wisdom was given to me in conversation with a dear friend and mentor and I can’t stop thinking about it. What parts of your life do you approach with discipline? What parts are spontaneous? Does one come before the other? In my painting practice, structure is most certainly the first step; it’s found in the routine and daily discipline of putting on my painting clothes and walking into my studio with a hot cup of coffee in hand. This habit precedes any spontaneous delight I’ll experience in painting. And it’s particularly apparent with the discipline involved with the application of the first layer of circles. Beyond the first layer, spontaneity begins to weave its way into the work with the layers of colored glazes and subsequent layers of circles.
This painting (and now print) is a fun and celebratory combination of both discipline and spontaneity.
